TuneLab enables you to customize your tuning by sampling the inharmonicity of a few notes from the piano. You have the flexibility to choose different tuning stretch options for the bass, treble, and mid-range of the scale, such as octaves, 12ths, double octaves, and more. Default settings are available if you're uncertain about your preferences.
Once a customized tuning has been created using inharmonicity measurements, you can save it under a specific name. The next time you need to tune that particular piano or one similar to it, simply load the corresponding tuning file and begin tuning. There are no practical limits to the number of tuning files that can be stored. TuneLab even provides sample tuning files and an "Average" tuning file, allowing you to start tuning right away without the need to measure inharmonicity.
TuneLab covers the entire piano range, from A0 to C8 (88 notes). Its automatic note-switching feature enables hands-free operation, while manual note switching can be done with a single touch.
The application offers two simultaneous displays. The first is the strobe-like Phase Display, a band where black squares move left or right depending on whether the note is sharp or flat. The objective is to tune the note until the squares stop moving. The second display is the Spectrum Display, which shows a graph of the frequency spectrum surrounding the desired note and indicates peaks in the audio frequency spectrum for each pitch present in the sound. The goal is to position the peak on the graph at a central red line. The Spectrum Display facilitates rough pitch-raises without muting, as each string of a unison produces its own peak on the graph. By having both displays visible at once, you gain a more comprehensive understanding of the tuning process compared to using a single spinner or needle-type display.
